1. Basics

  1. What is Dopplr?

Dopplr is an online service for frequent travellers. It lets you share your future travel plans with a group of trusted fellow travellers that you have chosen. It also reminds you of friends and colleagues who live in the cities you're planning to visit. You can use the service with your personal computer and mobile phone.
  2. Dopplr? Is that name supposed to mean something?

Yes. It's named after Christian Doppler, the 19th Century Austrian scientist who came up with the hypothesis for what became known as the Doppler effect. That's something we've all experienced when an emergency vehicle goes by with its siren on. The siren's pitch is higher before it gets to you, and the pitch drops as it passes. You may also have heard of Doppler Radar--a method that weather forecasters use to measure the direction and velocity of storms.
  3. Why would using this make my life better?

The main purpose, as noted above, is to keep in better touch with friends and colleagues as we travel the globe. No doubt you'll think of other ways--and we hope you'll let us know via our feedback form.
  4. Is anyone famous using Dopplr?

Probably, but we're not in the business of violating anyone's privacy, whether they're famous or, like us, known mainly to our friends.
  5. Why do you spell "Traveller" with two "l's" instead of one?

Ah, are you from the U.S.? We're based in Europe where the U.K. spelling is the one we've followed, rather than the American usage.
  6. I have a question you haven't answered here - what do I do?

First check out our discussion pages on Get Satisfaction. There's a wealth of knowledge there already, so you may find your question is answered. If not then you can use the site to ask us your question and we'll try to answer it within a few days. If all else fails, then fill in our feedback form.

2. Adding Trips

  1. How do I add trips?

Click on "Add a Trip" (upper right on your home page). Then fill out the form and you're off! You can also click on a city name and add a trip from there.
  2. Can I input multiple destinations in one trip form when I'm making several stops before heading home?

Yes, you can. Just click the link that says "Add another stop on this trip" link under the date in the add-trip form. (The option doesn't show up correctly in Internet Explorer 6 on Windows.)

  3. How can I get my trips into Dopplr via an external calendar?

You can subscribe to your online Google calendar and it will add trips to Dopplr automatically, as described here. You can also add trips to your Apple iCal calendar and have them show up on Dopplr, as we explain here. We hope to add Microsoft Outlook to this list in the relatively near future.
  4. How can I add additional trip information, such as flight number; departure and arrival times; hotels, etc?

We're going to make it possible to add more structured information about your trip. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, you can add the information in the Notes area for each trip.
  5. Sometimes, when travelling, I'm in two cities the same day. How can I indicate this?

The best way at the moment -- and we know we need to improve this -- is to create two trips with the same date.

  6. If my trip is starting, say April 1st, 21:00, should I enter the start date as 2008-04-01 or 2008-04-02, because most of the day, I'm still in my home town? Is there such a guideline?

Since Dopplr is all about serendipity, many people start the trip in Dopplr on the first full day at the destination, unless they have an early enough flight arrival. It's entirely up to you, of course.
  7. I often travel with my spouse/colleague/etc. Any shortcuts for entering our matching data?

At the moment you can copy any trip you see, so you don't have to re-enter details if you're making the same trip as someone else. We're considering ways to indicate that there is a special relationship between your trip and theirs, or a way to send a simple 'add this trip' link to people who will be travelling with you. We'll be enhancing this capability in a future release.
  8. How do I enter recurring (e.g. weekly or monthly) trips?

You can copy any trip now, but what you're suggesting is a step beyond that. It turns out to be quite difficult technically, but it's definitely on the road map.
  9. Can I create a tentative trip, or one with less specific plans?

Not specifically, but we're considering adding this.
  10. Why are the travel modes limited to plane, train and automobile? I'm travelling by ferry/motorbike/bicycle/etc.

We're considering adding other modes of transport with our next round of carbon features later in the year.

3. About Places and Place Names

  1. Why doesn't Dopplr recognise the place I want to travel to?

This is our most common problem, and we've made solving it a high priority. The reason it's not there is that we draw data from the geonames.org project, but we've been using a subset in order to make the large dataset more manageable. This has the unfortunate effect of leaving out several cities that people would like to list for their trips and/or home cities. We will be using the full data set soon.
  2. What is GeoNames, anyway?

GeoNames is an open project -- a list of place names, essentially, that anyone can use for geographic information online. Anyone can contribute improvements and additions to it. This means that if it doesn't cover a city, someone can go and add it. GeoNames issue a nightly update data file, which contains these improvements and additions.
  3. Will I be able to add a place not listed in GeoNames?

Not quite yet. But we're working on a manual "override" -- a way to enter the city yourself -- as part of a process that helps you and provides valuable feedback to GeoNames, which in turn will provide valuable data for other Dopplr users (and others who use the data).

  4. Why can't I use the name of a larger area than just a city as my destination, such as a region, island or territory -- or, for that matter, a resort?

We do want to expand the place names, as noted, and are working ways to go about this while preserving the simplicity of the interface and the value of the data set. However we need to emphasize the main purpose of Dopplr: serendipitous coincidences. These only become apparent when you are fairly specific about the places you are visiting. That said, and also as noted earlier, we do plan to have many, many more specific places in the database.
  5. Why does a place name I'm putting in the destination field automatically change to something else?

The reason it happens is that any time we don't recognise a place we throw it to Google's geocoder. Google sends back a point in the world. We then look at our own database and see what we do know that's nearby the real place. It's a bit like a "snap to grid" feature in a graphics application (and is both as useful and as irritating as such a feature).

  6. Can I use airport codes instead of city names?

Yes. When you use the IATA airport code, Dopplr recognises this and adds the nearest big city. For example, a trip to SFO will show up as San Francisco, and CDG (Charles De Gaulle) becomes a trip to Paris.

4. Invitations, Coincidences and Fellow Travellers

  1. How do I see trips of people I know?

This is entirely opt-in, but from one direction only. So they have to invite you. But even if someone else doesn't invite you to see their travels, you're free to invite them to see yours.
  2. How do I find people I know?

There are a few ways you can do this:

    • You can use the search box near the top of the page to search for them by name.
    • We can tell you which of your contacts (from Gmail, Flickr, Twitter etc) are already using Dopplr. All you need to do is use the 'find and invite' page.
    • You can also browse the 'others you might know' section of the Manage Connections page.
  3. How can I stop seeing someone else's trips temporarily?

Go to "Manage connections" at the top of the page and select the "Whose trips you can see" tab. Then click on "Mute" and you'll stop seeing their trips. (They will not be notified - their trips will simply stop appearing on your list of travellers.)

  4. Several people have let me see their trips, but am I required to share mine with them?

No, you're not obliged to share your trips with anyone. Of course, at some point they may decide to stop sharing their trips with you.

  5. How can I know when my friends are visiting my town?

Click on your home city from your home page. Dopplr will tell you which of your travellers are visiting, and will also note if you'll be away during the entire time that one or more of them are going to around.

  6. Can I view the upcoming trips of a friend or colleague in my desktop calendar?

Yes. At the bottom of a fellow traveller's trips -- someone who has shared his or her trips with you -- you'll see a link that says 'Subscribe to their trips in iCal'. Clicking on that gives you a link that you can import into your calendar.

  7. Can I select a specific group of travellers and put all of their trips into my calendar?

Not yet, but we will be adding this as soon as we can.

  8. Can I contact people from within Dopplr, apart from leaving a public note on their trip pages?

Currently you can send an email to fellow travellers whose trip overlaps with yours. You can find this option on the particular trip's page, under "Coincidences". We're looking for ways to expand this in the future.

  9. You already find my Facebook/Gmail/etc contacts on Dopplr - what about LinkedIn and Yahoo?

We don't import contacts from LinkedIn and Yahoo at the moment. We'd like to, though, and so it's a possibility for inclusion in future releases. In the meantime, perhaps importing from one of the other networks might help.

5. Mobile Use

  1. Do you have a version of the Dopplr website that works with my mobile phone?

Yes. Go to this page (http://m.dopplr.com) for our mobile site. It works with any XHTML-compatible mobile web browser.

  2. Can I use Dopplr from my mobile phone by text message?

You can. Once you've signed up, you need to use some simple formatting, as shown below.

These instructions are included in the email you receive when you sign up for the mobile service.

    Adding a New Trip

    @cityname ddmm ddmm

    e.g.
    @kyoto 1505 1805
adds a trip to Kyoto from May 15 to May 18

Adding a Note to Your Trips

    whatevertext youwant
adds a note to your next trip (or your ongoing trip if you're travelling)

    e.g.
Staying at the W Hotel, free for dinner when I arrive
adds the note "Staying at the W Hotel, free for dinner when I arrive" to your next trip (or your ongoing trip if you're travelling)

    cityname whatevertext youwant
adds a note to your next trip to that city

    e.g.
london Gilbert & George exhibit at Tate Modern
adds the note "Gilbert & George exhibit at Tate Modern" to your next trip to London

  3. Do you have an iPhone mobile version?

We don't have a site made especially for iPhone, but the Dopplr mobile website works just fine.

6. Other Ways to Get Dopplr

  1. Why does the Dopplr application on Facebook sometimes get my trips wrong?

Sometimes the return date of your trip may appear to be incorrect on Facebook. We're going to add a way for you to specify the time of day you're returning, which will fix this problem.

  2. Can I customise the Dopplr blog badge?

Yes, you can do whatever you like with CSS on your site, and it will override the default badge choices.

  3. Does Dopplr have an API so I can add my Dopplr trips to my own site or application?

Yes we do. Here's a blog post about our API, and here's the direct link.

  4. How can my Facebook friends see my Dopplr trips?

Use the Dopplr: Where Next? application on Facebook to show your Dopplr trips on your profile page. The news feed will also update to show when you are starting and returning from trips. Visit the Dopplr page on Facebook and click 'Add application' to add it to your Facebook account.

7. Account Settings

  1. How do I change my home city?

Type the name of a place into the text-entry box near the top of the page, and see if the city is listed. If it is, click on it. You'll see a link that says "Change your home city to {whatever you've selected}". Click that, then click the confirmation button ("Yes") and your home city will be changed.

  2. Can I change my screen name?

Yes. But we don't have a form to do this on the site, because it changes all your Dopplr URLs (homepage, bookmarks, feed subscriptions etc). If you're like to change your screen name, please send us a note.

  3. Can I add more information to my profile than my home city, such as my blog URL?

Not yet, but this is something we're going to be adding in the near future.

8. Privacy

  1. Can I stop Dopplr from displaying any information about me to strangers?

What we show to strangers is minimal now, but you can set it to zero. You'll find options for this on our privacy settings page.

  2. Why am I finding some information about my trips when I do searches? Is the RSS feed or something going public?

This is an RSS issue. Some "feed readers" let you make the RSS feed public, and these feeds are then picked up by search engines. We don't username/password protect the feeds because Google Reader doesn't support username/password protection, and so it would mean that Dopplr users couldn't use Google Reader.

The bottom line is that there is no simple fix to this. However, if you are having the problem, it means that someone you know is accidentally disclosing their feed. You could try tracking down who they are and asking them to make sure their feed is private.
